Whole wads of money: a man pretended to be the owner of a casino and received $ 1 million

Eric Gutierrez-Martinez was able to convince the casino staff that he was one of the owners and demanded that a huge amount be transferred to him. Police officers said that the gaming industry was shaken by a series of similar crimes.

In the US, 23-year-old Eric Gutierrez-Martinez has been accused of pretending to be the owner of the Circa Hotel in downtown Las Vegas and manipulating employees into giving him $1 million in cash. The Daily Star writes about it.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator tried to impersonate the owner of the casino and convince the workers to give him $1 million to make "emergency payments". Derek Stevens, one of the actual owners of the said business, said police are currently investigating. The man said he appreciates a good PR story, but this is not one of them. The casino is cooperating with the police in this investigation.

"We appreciate their efforts so far and are unable to comment on further action due to the ongoing investigation," Stevens added.

According to information provided by the police, the suspect ordered the checkout clerk to take $320,000 for a supposedly urgent payment and give the money to the fire department to purchase security devices. The employee followed the instructions three times. As a result, $1.1 million was withdrawn.

Law enforcement was able to trace the vehicle driven by the unidentified person and later confirmed that it was Martinez. During a search of the criminal's house, 849,000 dollars in cash with the inscription "Circa" on the packs were found.

The detainee is found on bail in the amount of 45 thousand dollars on two counts of theft. He is due to appear in court on July 5.

"This event is very similar to a previous incident that occurred at another establishment in Clark County and also in another state," police said.

The news of similar robberies was also commented on by Derek Stevens, who said that the problem goes beyond the Circa casino only.

“Apparently, four Las Vegas casinos have been affected by this very complex and unreported scam. We only found out about this now, because this is the first arrest, the first money returned. There will be more, this is wild,” the man said.
