Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has suspended operations of the Bellagio room service kitchen and employee dining room after finding serious sanitation risks during a routine inspection.
On September 19, 2024, SNHD ordered the closure of both the room service kitchen and the fry table in the Mangia employee dining room. The reason for the closure was due to a backflow of wastewater from the drainage systems, which created an immediate health hazard. According to Casino.org, SNHD regulations required both areas to close immediately.
SNHD clarified that issues like these require a quick response, regardless of the number of demerit points received during the inspection. Although the Bellagio kitchen received five demerit points during the initial inspection, a serious drainage issue led to the closure. A similar incident occurred earlier on March 5, when the room service kitchen received eight demerit points and was also temporarily closed.
SNHD explained that there are two main reasons for closing a business: if it receives 41 or more demerit points during an inspection, or if there is an immediate health threat, as was the case with the Bellagio. In this case, the closure was due to the health threat, not the fines.
The next day, on September 20, SNHD re-inspected the room service kitchen and the employee fry station. The kitchen received eight demerit points, but was cleared to reopen. The Mangia fry station also received three demerit points and was cleared to reopen.
SNHD noted that the businesses were able to reopen because the primary issue — the health threat — had been addressed. The Bellagio kitchen and Mangia fry station received “A” grades during the re-inspection, confirming that they were in compliance with health standards. Bellagio owner MGM Resorts has not yet commented on the situation or the Health and Safety Executive's findings. Bellagio is renowned for its fine dining on the Las Vegas Strip, and the incident highlights the importance of maintaining strict health and safety standards, even at well-known establishments.
