The newly launched Fanatics Sports Betting mobile app has taken off with a bang, especially in terms of the number of downloads during the first week of the 2023 NFL season. The operator introduced the Fanatics Sportsbook app in several U.S. states last month and expanded to seven more in late August.
According to research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming (EKG), during the opening week of the 2023 NFL season, the Fanatics-PointsBet combo achieved an impressive 14% share of app downloads among top U.S. online sports betting brands.
This 14% download share comprises 9% from the Fanatics Sportsbook app and 5% from PointsBet: A Fanatics Experience, which is the branding used in some states where regulatory approval is pending for the PointsBet US acquisition.
Fanatics is already making a positive impact on PointsBet, which is based in Australia. PointsBet decided to part ways with its U.S. operations due to financial losses and a lack of market share.
While it remains to be seen if Fanatics can address these issues, it has certainly made a strong start in attracting bettors to its sportsbook. PointsBet: A Fanatics Experience secured 5% of sportsbook app downloads last week, a significant improvement from the mere 1% captured in the same period last year.
EKG data reveals that only FanDuel and Bet365 saw increases in app downloads during the first week of NFL action. FanDuel's increase was modest, and Bet365 was starting from a small base in terms of the number of states where it was operational a year ago.
Fanatics Sportsbook's impressive initial performance may have been aided by the operator's creative promotional strategies. Both Fanatics and PointsBet offered promotions centered around merchandise, which seemed to resonate with U.S. online sports bettors. For example, PointsBet offers new customers a free jersey if they wager $50 or more.
However, it's important to note that downloads do not necessarily translate into actual bets. Many users may download the app but not engage in wagering.
EKG raises questions about what percentage of Fanatics downloads came from states where online sports betting is not yet live and whether the Fanatics and PointsBet products are compelling enough to retain acquired players after they receive their promotional merchandise.
As we move into the second week of the NFL season, data from Sensor Tower indicates that both Fanatics Sportsbook and PointsBet: A Fanatics Experience continue to experience brisk download activity.
